Authentic Jungle Experience at the heart of wilderness

Located in the southeast corner of Sri Lanka , the 18,149 hectare KUMANA (YALA EAST) NATIONAL PARK is a well-known eco tourism attraction and bird sanctuary where a multitude of birds breed and roost. One of the most significant features of the park is the ‘Kumana Villu’ – a 200 hectare natural swamp lake, fed by the ‘Kumbukkan Oya’ through a half mile long narrow channel. It is at this mangrove swamp that many water birds nest in May and June. Regular sightings include such species of bird as pelicans, painted storks, spoonbills, white ibis, herons, egrets and little cormorants.

The very rare black-necked stork has also been spotted at the swamp. Besides the prolific birdlife, Kumana is also home to some of the mammals found in the larger YALA NATIONAL PARK (west) park, such as elephants and leopards. The vegetation in Kumana consists mainly of mangrove trees, kumbuk trees and the karan fern, as well as the open marsh area. For bird watching enthusiasts, the park is an ‘absolute must’.

We had the best experience on our safari. The guide Ansa really knew how to find and spot the animals. He was super nice and very respectful towards the animals. We saw 3!!! Leopards in the wild. Also a bear, lots of elephants and crocs. It was awesome, would absolutely recommend these guys! 🙂

  2. Leonard Doepp:

We booked a evening tour and got the full experience! Thank you Ansa and Co.

The communication was great and the driver picked us up at our Hotel. Brought us to the gate of Kumana National Park, managed all entrance costs and then we started a great safari.
The driver found great spots to see all different kinds of animals. We saw elephants, buffalo, crocodiles, a bear and got lucky to see also a beautiful leopard.
It was a great experience and we would recommend it to everyone!

  3. Adreian COriara:

Kumana National Park is one of the most beautiful and peaceful wildlife destinations in Sri Lanka. The park is especially famous for its incredible birdlife, particularly around the lagoons and wetlands, where you can see pelicans, painted storks, herons, and even rare migratory birds during the season.
The landscape is a stunning mix of dry forest, open grasslands, and water bodies, creating excellent opportunities to see elephants, buffalo, crocodiles, deer, and occasionally leopards. What makes Kumana special is that it is less crowded compared to other national parks, allowing visitors to enjoy wildlife in a calm and natural environment.
The safari experience is truly rewarding, especially during early morning or late afternoon drives. It is a perfect destination for bird watchers, nature lovers, and anyone who appreciates untouched wilderness.
Highly recommended for an authentic Budget Arugambay Tours wildlife experience.

Kumana National park, nestled on Sri Lanka’s southeast coast, is a serene haven for birdwatchers and wildlife lovers. Famous for its seasonal bird nesting at the Kumana Villu wetland, it hosts species like painted storks, spoonbills, and pelicans. The park also shelters elephants, leopards, and crocodiles amidst dry forests, lagoons, and mangroves. Ancient ruins found within add cultural depth to this natural wonder. Quiet and less crowded, Kumana offers a peaceful, authentic experience of Sri Lanka’s wild beauty.
    Highly Recommended Budget Arugambay Tours

One of the highlights of my whole trip to Sri Lanka! I can’t recommend this more! I booked it via the official main website and everything was really easy to organise. We were picked up from our hostel in Arugam Bay at 5.30am and the driver was very knowledgeable. We saw 2 leopards among other amazing animals and birds. We also were provided with water and snacks. We also appreciated that it wasn’t overly busy or crowded.

  6. Paochieh Cheng:

It’s a massive national park with various species and has a museum at the entrance where you can find skeletons, skins, and other fascinating information of the animals within the park.

There are mostly buffaloes, deers, peacocks, and elephants, but you can also find foxes, crocodiles, different types of birds, reindeer, hares, mongoose, wild boar and if you’re lucky enough then a leopard too.

However, it’s disappointing to know that the bathroom facilities are of poor quality, and there is no proper access to more washrooms within the park, including rest stops but other than that it was a pretty good experience
